Curtis Junior High School is one of the crown jewels of the University Place School District. It dates back nearly five decades, when the district bought a piece of land that became a junior and senior high school campus, and the namesake for both schools is longtime local school advocate George R. Curtis.

In 2006, UP voters approved an $86 million school construction bond that included $55 million for a new junior high school, which would continue to house the community's eighth- and ninth-graders. The location of the junior high school, which was on the property's south end along 40th Street West, is now closer to the west along Grandview Drive West.
