Science Saturday Draws Big Crowds to Charles Wright

Tacoma, Wash. – More than 100 students from across the South Puget Sound region gathered at Charles Wright Academy this past Saturday to conduct scientific experiments.

It's all part of an annual event known as 'Science Saturday.' This free event draws large crowds of elementary and secondary school-aged children every year. It was the brain child of Charles Wright staff members who wanted to share the school's robust science program with kids in the community. The private school is known for having a strong science curriculum, which begins in Junior Kindergarten.

Every year the event features new activities, but the ultimate goal is the same. To get more kids interested in science. When asked what she enjoys about Science Saturday, Alisha Bright, sixth grade science teacher at Charles Wright responded, "Its a great opportunity for me to share the wonder of the universe and the excitement I feel about scientific research with new students.”

The event is free and open to the public, but advance registration was required. Depending on a student’s grade level, they participated in one the following activities:

  • Grades 1-3/Geo Hunters: students will Work as geologists as we discover how minerals form, combine, and react to one another. Get ready to sift for gemstones, probe for fossils, and radiate a rock!
  • Grades 4-6/Let's Blast Off:  Junior scientists are in for a wild ride as they learn the basic principles of rocketry and design, before building and launching a water rocket.
