Old Town Dock Reopening Celebration Set for Sunday

The event is a joint effort between the City of Tacoma and Metro Parks and will feature jazz music and marine displays from local organizations.

Old Town Dock will make a splash this Father's Day, June 16, with a public dedication and family friendly festivities beginning at 11 a.m.

The event, a joint effort between the City of Tacoma and Metro Parks, will feature jazz music by Pearl Django, and marine displays from the Washington Dragon Boat Association, the Tacoma Fire Department, the Tacoma Police Department, the Pierce County Sherriff’s Department and Evergreen Rowing.

Chandler O'Leary's latest public art installation, "Droplets," will serve as an illustrated scavenger hunt featuring 24 enamel medallions hidden in plain sight around the dock with interpretive signage helping to tell its story.

Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland, Metro Parks Board President Aaron Pointer and State Representative Jake Fey will each provide remarks and join other community leaders and guests in attendance.

"Old Town Dock is such a vital part of Tacoma's waterfront," said Strickland. “We are excited about making it accessible for our residents and visitors to enjoy for many years to come.”

The local landmark officially reopened last month to connect residents and visitors to the recreational amenities that line Tacoma's public waterfront.

The Old Town Dock, located at 2123 Schuster Parkway, reopened on May 15, 2013 after five years and $2.3 million in renovations, according to Metro Parks Tacoma.
