Spotlight, Solar Power Help University Place Veterans Plaza Get Off To Good Start

But the group is still looking for people to help purchase pavers to help build the plaza off Bridgeport Way West.

Last year, we brought you news of the project.

The group has been busy with dedications, light installations and other work to get the project underway. Here's an update the group posted on its Facebook page over the weekend:

We dedicated our first Flag Pole on Veterans Day 2011. The next day we attached a solar powered spot light about half way up pole so we could still go to half staff when needed. Slight problem with solar power here in the Northwest is the sunlight is lacking during the winter months, so the light would only stay on for a few hours each night. For a few weeks we had a dedicated Flag Detail raise the flag each morning and retire it each night. After some research by Kenn T, we purchased a spot light which was installed on one of the street lights and is working great every night. Check out our website and purchase a paver to help us build our Veterans Plaza.

The "paver" which the post referred to describes one of the donation opportunities still available to help the project become reality. The brainchild of former Councilwoman Jean Brooks, the project will consist of two plazas off Bridgeport near Cirque Drive West.

Volunteers have been working over the past year to raise money and build the plaza, as well as erect the project's flag. For more information, visit the group's website.
