Here's a call out to anyone who to potential captains for the project, courtesy of the organizers:
WANTED: A dozen “Construction Captains” willing to volunteer for all six days of “Build Week”, September 20-26, 2011. Their task is to assist professional constuction consultants in overseeing crews of volunteers and help maintain quality and continuity during the construction of the Playground by the Sound in the North Meadow of Chambers Creek Properties.
These playground “Heros” will start each day at 7 a.m., and work with various construction crews until approximately 8 p.m. It may be possible for a limited number of individuals to share the “captain” responsibility with one other person. The minimun commitment is four days, either Tuesday through Friday or Thursday through Sunday. We will feed you lunch and dinner and your name will be imortalized forever in our playground kiosk. We will even throw in a special Playground by the Sound construction captain commemorative t-shirt!
Captains should enjoy working with people, be strongly committed to the project and be willing and physically able to “go the distance” through the entire construction day. They make it possible for hundreds of volunteers to work together efficiently. Some captains will have tasks that involve complex and precise carpentry. Others will oversee work that requires no carpentry skills at all.
The Playground by the Sound was designed from the ideas and dreams of the children of University Place. A “community built” playground is about more than just playground assembly. Serving as a construction captain is about getting people involved, building bridges, empowering volunteers and truly building community. Participation teaches our children about community service and that their dreams can become reality when we all work together for a common cause. Construction captains are an indispensable part of building the Playground by the Sound.
