So did baseball just "happen?"

You think the world of “who invented baseball?” is divided into two camps. The discredited Abner Doubleday, believed only by stupid people and the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce.  And the baseball-was-the-English-game-of-”rounders” crowd who seem to be in the majority.  But there's a third answer to “who invented baseball?”  the answer, according to amateur historian David Block who studies old  newspapers and diaries, is: “no one person invented it; it evolved over many years.”   baseball, or something involving bases and balls, has been around a long time.  Like a newspaper from 1749, quote “On Tuesday last his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, and Lord Middlesex, played at Base-Ball, at Walton in Surry”.   but, what about the game of “rounders”; that was first mentioned in print in 1828 meaning, perhaps, rounders evolved from baseball rather than the other way around.  only problem with Block's research is, he's never found anything that tells how this ancient “baseball” was played.  He thinks “batters” may have “batted” the ball with their hands.  And has yet to find any mention of free agents, performance enchaining drugs, or costumed mascots.  So the answer is: baseball evolved.  By the way, it's OK to say “evolved” here because there's no mention of baseball in the Bible.  At least none David Block has found so far.

............and that’s the way the ball bounces
