Tacoma Pride Festival Takes Place July 12 - 17

The City of Tacoma is just one of many sponsors of the 2013 Tacoma Pride Festival, which kicks off at 4:30 p.m. this Friday, July 12, with the Flag Raising and Pride Foundation Rainbow Awards for community leaders at the Pantages Theater (901 Broadway).

The festival continues on Saturday, July 13, with the annual Out in the Park street fair along Broadway, between 9th and 11th streets, and is open to the entire community.

Council Member Ryan Mello is an ambassador for Tacoma Pride, and has been working in partnership with the Rainbow Center and other organizations to produce the festival.

"We have a lot to celebrate as a society and community this year,” said Mello. “With the Supreme Court striking down the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and Washington voters passing Referendum 74 last fall, we are a giant step closer to protecting all families in America.  Still, much more work needs to happen to ensure seniors can grow old with dignity with their partners and not be pushed back in the closet; that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth are safe in school and not facing unprecedented levels of homelessness; and that bi-national couples are treated fairly in immigration policy.  Our local festival is a time to celebrate, but also to remember the important work that still lies ahead of us."
