Tyler Jamison, April 11

This week, Tyler shares his experience arguing the controversial topic of Affirmative Action. Also, he gets in some time to hang out with an old friend.

Well, I finally caught up with make-up work from being gone!

This past week has probably been my hardest academic challenge all year, but I think i handled it pretty well using a list of priorities and a timeline. My first major task was getting together with my partner in AP Gov to finish our presentation that is due on Wednesday. The format was very similar to the debates we did first semester, but this time we did not have an opponent. We had to convince the class of our view and then open to questions at the end.

Our topic was affirmative action and we were against it. Affirmative Action refers to policies that take factors including race, color, religion, gender , or national origin into consideration in order to benefit an underrepresented group, usually as a means to counter the effects of a history of discrimination. Our main points were that it causes reverse discrimination, lowers college standards of student admission, it is racist and that it does not treat everyone equally. To have a true anti-racist society we cannot label each other, and race should not be the deciding factor in college applicants, scholarships, promotions etc.

Using court cases ruling against affirmative action, we had strong evidence to back up our stance against the matter. The questions we recieved at the end were not too challenging because roughly 90 to 95 percent of the class agreed with us. We went into much greater detail, if you have anymore questions feel free to e-mail me or comment this article.

I also have to make up a math test of laws of sines and cosines. Then yesterday I had to take a physics quiz and rush home from lacrosse practice to work on an English essay due Friday! I was up until 2 a.m. I am usually not up that late or a procrastinator, but I had no urge to start a four-to-five page essay.

On top of all this, my best friend, Blue, has been back in town from the Air Force Academy on spring break. We went fishing and tried to get a chance to go off-roading, but we fell short on time. We actually spent alot of time on Fort Lewis using their huge weight room. We did new workouts consisting of negative situps, punching bags and a rope climb! The sun finally came out and he ran routes for me. It is nice having a reciever from the Air Force Academy to throw to, so I can .
