Session 1: Nature Awareness and Wilderness Survival

This will be a day of transformational learning experiences designed to draw you into a relationship with nature. Through a series of fun and engaging activities you will heighten your nature awareness and build a sense of self-reliance, self-confidence and wonder.  Learn wilderness survival and emergency preparedness skills, experience a challenge/team building course and become comfortable in a wild setting. Spend a day working with nature.

Thursday / July 12th / 9-4pm

Session 2: Mapping and Navigation

This session will cover both compass basics and map reading while incorporating GPS navigation. Participants will learn how to use a compass and map to find their way through an orienteering course then learn how to use GPS units to pinpoint your location, mark waypoints, plot courses, and create routes. To add to the fun we will create a hidden treasure scavenger hunt for parents to find during the campout.

Friday/ July 13th / 9-4pm

Session 3: Earth Stewardship

Through challenges and hands-on investigations, participants will become aware of the interconnectedness of the natural world and the complexity of local environmental issues. We will venture into Chambers Creek Park to study as environmental scientists and ecologists do. Students will learn first-hand what environmental issues we face locally and what they, as stewards of the Earth, can do to help.  Be prepared to get dirty working on some habitat restoration projects and conducting water quality monitoring measurements.

Saturday & Sunday / July 14th & July 15th / 3:15-11:30 pm (sat) / 6:00-9:00 am (Sun)

Session 4: Overnight Campout at Chambers Creek Regional Park

Bring your parent/guarding for an evening of adventure, fun, food and camping. Students’ skills are put to the test as they utilize their new abilities to guide their family through challenging activities that will show what they have learned throughout the week.  A BBQ meal will be provided. Families that need equipment may barrow from a limited supply of 40 tents, sleeping bags, and pads on a first come first serve basis.
