Curtis Girls Water Polo Team Recognized by City Council for Championship Win

University Place Town Hall was filled with pride on Monday, as the Curtis High School varsity girls' water polo team was recognized for winning the 2013 state championship, defeating rivals and reigning champions at Gig Harbor High School.

"The City Council extends our most sincere congratulations and applause to the varsity girls' water polo team for this honor and achievement," said UP Mayor Ken Grassi.

The team and coaching staff was on hand to accept the proclamation. Coach Dennis Piccolotto told everyone in attendance that the high school girls spend at least 3 hours in the pool every day and worked hard as a team to achieve this goal, a "big deal" for the water polo community.

"We appreciate everyone for recognizing our achievement... you often put a lot of time and effort into water polo without much recognition," said Piccolotto. "It feels great to bring home the state championship."

Team captain and CHS senior Sophia Spurlock said that she's been on the team for four years and every year they lost by only one or two points. This year was different--the team worked hard to hone their game, learn from past mistakes and bond "as a family."

"I can't think of a better way to end my senior year," said Spurlock.
