Curtis Girls Water Polo Captures Fourth State Title Over The Weekend

The Curtis girls water polo team captured the 2013 state championship over the weekend, hanging onto a 4-3 victory over rival Gig Harbor.

Coach Dennis Piccolotto gave Patch a recap of the Lady Viks' title run:

"After defeating Lakes High School in the quarter finals 16-3, and Newport High school 10-3 in the semifinals on Saturday morning, the Vikings were set for a sixth straight state championship game against the Gig Harbor Tides."

"The Lady Viks lost two close games against the Tides earlier during the regular season and all knew the championship game would be a nail biter. Both teams did not disappoint as, although Curtis never trailed during the game, they never lead by more than two goals at any point and eventually held on to win by a sore of 4-3."

"It was a defensive battle all night with Curtis scoring two of their four goals on 5 meter penalty shots, one by Hannah Holly, and one by Katie Van Riper.  The other two goals scored were by Hannah Holly on a man-up opportunity and a cross cage outside shot."

"Sophia Spurlock was awarded Washington State’s Defensive MVP as with the help of her teamamtes, Sophia shut down Gig Harbor's best scorer while also tallying nine steals. Hannah Holly was awarded Washington State’s Offensive MVP as she scored three of Curtis' four championship game goals and lead all athletes with 24 tournament goals."

First Team, All-State for Curtis were:

  • Sophia Spurlock
  • Hannah Holly
  • Madeline Stauffacher

Second Team, All-State for Curtis were:
  • Jena Postma
  • Katie Van Riper
  • Joeli Reim was named an All-State honorable mention
Congratulations to Curtis and the Lady Viks!
