WHIZ KIDS UPDATE: Boy Scout Troop No. 248 Braving Alaska Next 10 Days

The University Place troop, one of the oldest in Washington, is making its seventh visit to Alaska since they first traveled in 1986. The scouts raised about $500 themselves and maintain a C average to go.

Today, the members of set out on an Alaskan adventure in which visit with other scouts, see wild animals and enjoy other fun stuff.

Because each scout had to work so hard for the trip, the troop will most likely cherish every moment there.

Scoutmaster Dave Matzen gave Patch the details of their excursion before the group left for Alaska today.

"This is the seventh time we have done this trip since 1986, and each trip gets bigger and more exciting as we find new things to do up there," he said.Β

The scouts begin planning for the adventure in early fall. Each member must raise about $500 and maintain a C average in school.

This year, the contingent from University Place consists of 10 scouts and eight leaders. Their trip includes everything from catching logging and Russian dance shows to sea kayaking and rafting.

They even get (or have) to participate in a polar bear plunge into freezing Lake Mendenhall.

Matzen says he will keep an e-journal for the group by sending daily e-mails to families and sponsors.

"As we visit each city, we meet the local people, do fellowship with the local scout troops, learn about life on these islands, and well have a lot of fun," he said.

That's definitely a reason to be excited. Congrats and have fun, scouts!
