University Place Students Outpacing State In Math, Scores Show

The state's new measurement for math proficiency show more students passing, but state Superintendent Randy Dorn says there's still a ways to go.

Following a statewide trend, state test scores released today show students passing math and science at a higher rate.

This year marks the first round of scores from the math end-of-course exams for geometry and algebra, which is a new method of measuring students’ math proficiency.

Last spring, all students in algebra 1 and geometry took state exams at the end of those specific courses in June instead of the traditional high school comprehensive math exam two months before the end of the school year.

In University Place, almost 70 percent of students passed the Year 1 algebra exam, while 73 percent passed the Year 2 geometry exam.

The district saw gains in science at all grade levels, and it maintained scores above the state average in reading at writing.

Statewide, scores increased, according to a statement from state Superintendent Randy Dorn.

In math, 62 percent of students statewide passed the Year 1 exam, while almost 73 percent passed the Year 2 exam.

“The results from the end-of-course exams are encouraging, but we still have plenty of work to do to increase our math scores,” he said. “I believe the first-time passing rates are improved from the days of the old math WASL for two primary reasons: teachers have told me our new math learning standards are clearer and students are taking the exams at the end of their respective classes.”
