The football and soccer teams already have games under their belts. Volleyball, water polo and cross country will soon follow suit.
It's the start of the school year, and sports nuts around University Place know what that means.
Sports at . Football. Volleyball. Soccer. Water polo. Cross country. Anything that allows them to scream the life out of their lungs and cheer - they're there.
Patch knows how they feel. That's why we want to give UP a glimpse of what local sports teams are doing this week. For most, it's the start of the season.

Football
Curtis started its 2011 season the same way it has the past three seasons: with a win. The Vikings got past Rogers 26-20 in an SPSL 4A matchup last Friday that saw Curtis fall behind early. Rogers opened up an early 14-0 lead before the Vikings rallied behind touchdown runs of 7, 34, 25 and 2 yards from E.J. Deveaux to give Curtis a 26-14 lead in the fourth quarter. Rogers closed the gap early, but Curtis held on for its 24th straight conference win.
Next up for the Vikings is an away game against Spanaway Lake, 7 p.m., this Friday. Spanaway Lake opened its season with a 56-7 blowout loss to Puyallup last Friday.
Volleyball
The Vikings start the season ranked fourth in the state 4A by The Seattle Times. Curtis qualified for the state tournament in 2010, falling in the first round to eventual second place finisher Issaquah. The Vikings start the season at Tumwater, 7:15 pm., Thursday.
Water polo
Led by Coach Dennis Piccolotto, the team is coming off of its . It went undefeated in its final 12 games, including the championship game against Rogers.
The team will play an inter-squad match Thursday before competing in a jamboree at Wilson on Saturday. The jamboree - which begins at 12:45 p.m. - features matches against Peninsula, Wilson, Enumclaw and Rogers.
Girls Soccer
The girls soccer team will be looking to build on its state tournament appearance in 2010 (first-round 2-1 loss to Snohomish). The Vikings started the season Tuesday with a 3-1 loss at home against Beamer, and they play at Puyallup, 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Cross Country
The school's distance runners are at Fort Steilacoom today. It looks like it will be a tune-up for the team's trip to Honolulu for the Iolani Invite on Sept. 17.
