Happy 125th Birthday, University of Puget Sound!

The University of Puget Sound turned 125 years old on Sunday, March 17, 2013.

The big day is here!

On Sunday, March 17, University of Puget Sound turned 125 years old. That is older than the state of Washington and almost as old as the city of Tacoma. UPS shared the special day with St. Patrick, so there will be plenty of green among the maroon.

The City of Tacoma has declared March 17 officially University of Puget Sound Day, in recognition of all that the city’s residents and the university have shared together since 1888. (Fun fact: UPS was originally intended to be located in University Place!)

To help us celebrate, friends and visitors including Bill Cosby, Robert Reich, President Ron and Mary Thomas, Grizz the Logger, our French faculty (in French!), the community music children’s violin class (with strings!), PacRim students, Adelphian choir alumni (in song!), and many faculty, staff, students and others have wished Puget Sound a “Happy Birthday” in their very individual and sometimes melodic ways on video.

On Sunday the videos will begin appearing on the 125th Anniversary Web pages at www.pugetsound.edu/125. You can view five featured videos on the home page and click on the “Celebrating 125 Years” banner to see more on our YouTube channel. We’ll upload birthday greetings throughout the year, so check back often to view them all.

The market runs 9 a.m.–4 p.m. in Memorial Fieldhouse on campus. Original dress, tunes, poems, instruments, noise-makers, pets, children, friends—all are welcome. Or simply you.

Other ways to participate? Tell us how you are celebrating University of Puget Sound Day—or better yet, show us! Or, come to a Loggers game. The Loggers are driving hard toward their goal for 125 victories this year and as of early Friday, had notched up 103 wins. For fans there are ongoing games of baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, crew, golf, and track and field. Collins Memorial Library continues to have its 125 Years in the Stacks collection of 125 books through the past century and a quarter for viewing online. It is truly a treat for book lovers. Finally, watch the 125th Anniversary Events page for more public events throughout this year. We’re looking forward to seeing you or hearing from you.
