COMING THIS WEEKEND: Curtis Girls Track Overcomes Hurdles En Route To State Title

Toward the end, the girls competed as a cohesive unit, but first-year Coach Sarah Burns — a former Curtis track-and-field star herself — will admit that wasn't always the case this past season.

Last month, Curtis girls track and field captured the state title with performances that were fast, smooth and seamless.

But first-year Coach Sarah Burns - who was a member of the team's state title runs in 2003 and 2004 - says that wasn't always the case this season, particularly off the track.

The team might have been a cohesive unit at state - everything from the baton handoffs to the constant encouragement from the stands - but that was a product of the Vikings' gradual growth, as well as them buying into Burns' philosophy that track and field is a team sport.
