Enriches Home Care Through Spirit Nourishing Activities

Targeting those activities to the interests and ability level of the senior brings the best results.

If your in-home care consists of sitting someone in front of a television, change it!

I believe the key to successful in-home caregiving is to make a senior’s life as joyful and active as possible so his or her life is honored and quality experiences are still attainable. This means that part of the in-home care experience should be about engaging a senior through enriching activities. Targeting those activities to the interests and ability level of the senior brings the best results.

This spirit-centered care begins with discovering as much about the care recipient’s preferences, dislikes, dreams, hobbies and history as possible. In the case of a home care agency, this involves a “getting to know you” interview with the care recipient and/or family members. Questions may be asked such as, “If you had 15-30 minutes, what would you like to do?” Or, “Is it meaningful for you to work in the yard or watch the sunset or polish silver and clean the house?”

What are some benefits of enrichment activities for seniors?

  • Alleviate boredom and lack of motivation
  • Boost self-confidence and a sense of independence
  • Renew or enhance a sense of purpose and meaning to life
  • Temporarily recover lost memories
  • Regain physical abilities
  • Create a sense of wellbeing for those with a chronic illness
