Preparing For The "Big One"

UP resident and Patch Mom, Rachel Lauzon, offers her perspective and voice on everything University Place. Today, she shares information about C.E.R.T., or Community Emergency Response Team.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue is getting ready for their fall training session of Community Emergency Response Team, better known as C.E.R.T., and you have a chance to learn how to be prepared for a natural disaster and how to help yourself, your family and your neighborhood.

The program is intended to help citizens gain the knowledge they need in order to help others amidst a natural disaster when emergency vehicles and help may be hours or even days off.

Think of it as fending for yourself for the time being.

At the University Place Festival, my husband came up to me and said, “We are doing this.”

I naturally had no idea what he was talking about since the entire morning we went from booth to booth to see what UP had to offer us.

C.E.R.T.  training, starting in September, of course; I should have guessed. After six classes and an exercise to practice the skills you’ve learned, you’ll be a little more prepared for the “big one” or even a “little one.”

Class instructors are uniformed Firefighters with experience in the specific field they will be teaching, and the classes are free.

You need to attend all of the classes in order to complete the program and at the program’s end, you’ll receive a backpack filled with supplies to help you help yourself, your family and your neighbors during a natural disaster.
