UPDATE: West Pierce Has Busy Morning in Lakewood

The agency first responded this morning to a report of a car that crashed into the Moon Rise Cafe, which is closed until further notice. Then, it responded to another crash, this time involving a car and a Pierce Transit bus.

The will be closed until further notice after a car crashed into the restaurant Tuesday morning, according to West Pierce Fire & Rescue spokeswoman Jenny Sharp.

An 80-year-old man who stopped for breakfast at the cafe, where he's a regular, tried to put his car in park but left it in drive, according to Lakewood Police Lt. Chris Lawler. When the car slowly moved onto the curb, the driver thought he was stepping on the brakes but instead stepped on the accelerator and crashed through the front of the restaurant, causing significant damage.

The driver didn't report any injuries in the 8 a.m. incident at the cafe, located at 6020 Main Street in the , but he was taken to Madigan Army Medical Center for evaluation, Lawler said.

MoonRise is a family-owned establishment and . It's located between and . Owner Chris Curren opened MoonRise four years ago with her daughter Sam Syverson after several years in the restaurant industry.

While on scene at the MoonRise Café, West Pierce crews were dispatched to a motor vehicle incident at 4500 Steilacoom Boulevard. Sharp said a truck rear-ended a Pierce Transit bus and five patients were taken to nearby hospitals with minor injuries.

At approximately 8 a.m. this morning, West Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to reports of car into a building at the Moon Rise Café, located at 6020 Main Street in the Lakewood Towne Center. Upon responding, crews found one car in the front of the building. One patient was transported to a local-area hospital with minor injuries. The restaurant will be closed until further notice.
