VIEWFINDER: Celebrating, Reuniting the U.S. Army's 14th Cavalry Regiment

Soldiers from the 1-14 Cavalry Regiment meet with veterans of the 1-14 on Friday, showing them advancements in weapons, vehicles and equipment and overall lifestyle changes at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Decades separate their ages, but the mission remains the same.

On Friday, about 30 Army veterans with the 14th Cavalry Association from around the country marked the regiment's 110th anniversary at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. In honor of the regiment's history, the veterans toured the base's displays of various Stryker vehicles and other cavalry unit equipment.

“Even though we have more technology, we still do the same thing,” said Lt. Luke Fletcher. “The mission is still the same.”

Members of JBLM’s 14th Cavalry Regiment of the 3rd Stryker Brigade were eager to greet the veterans on Rose Field, where 10 stations were set up to observe the various systems utilized during full-spectrum operations. As part of the tours, the veterans also visited barracks and the motor pool.

Many of the veterans were impressed by how technology has shaped the operations of the Army. Current 1-14 Cavalry soldiers enjoyed the shared camaraderie.

“It’s like talking to living legends,” said Sgt. Ben Giddens. “There’s a lot of history floating around and it's great to hear what they say from their experiences and how much has changed."

Richard Garcia, who was a member of the 1-14, was impressed with how accurate the weapons are now.

“That’s something you dreamed about,” Garcia said.
