Town Center Flag Pole Goes Up In University Place

Crews were seen raising it today of the Civic Building within the last hour.

After months of discussion and debate, University Place is finally raising the flag pole in front of Town Center.

Crews raised the flag today in front of the Civic Building, just outside of the atrium. This shot of the side of the building via University Place webcam shows a worker putting it up.

So, after wrestling through such a heated issue, I think most of the community can agree on this: Thank goodness it's finally up.

Brent, I dare you to put your tongue on it! If you do I'll buy you a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. Howard

I am proud we will soon actually see a flag - will there be a ceremony?? I rather like the pole - I must admit I have never seen a bronze colored one before.... I think it is now time to go for the gusto and add `UP Police' and `City of UP' to the upper row (not on the window) marquee to keep `Library' in good company and signify that at least these entities will remain in UP!

Great idea, Ken, but you forgot another community institution that might need representation: Trader Joe's :)

I'm glad it is up. Kinda sad it caused so much turmoil.

I am and will always be disappointed that a bronze duck was given precedence over our national emblem the American flag. Irene Potter

Thank you, Javier Figueroa for first introducing the idea to council and then, despite the many naysayers, maintaining your unwavering determination to bring the issue to a successful climax.

"I rather like the pole - I must admit I have never seen a bronze colored one before.... " I think it's so it matches the duck, which I heard will be exchanging places of prominance with the flag pole to honor our country and those who died for our freedom...NOT...:-))

I saw the flag on my walk this morning, it's real purdee!

It's good to see it go up. I was worried that I might forget what country I lived in whilst driving from one end of the city to the other.

Great photos, Howard!

Wish I could take credit for the pictures but Barbara is the only shutterbug in the family! Howard

I can't help but notice the difference in the perception I have of the one photo that has the pole, but no flag, and the same shot, with the flag...one is cold and dark..the other, warm, inviting..comforting...hopeful... a real `before' and `after' shot! I am thankful...

Was there an "official" ceremony for the flag pole's erection?, and if not, will there be?
