POLL: Who Do You Believe When It Comes To University Place's Finances?

A reported squabble over words between the City of University Place and 10th Congressional candidate Dick Muri is another sign that political season has definitely arrived.

Who do you believe?

That's the question at the center of a war of words between University Place and

The News Tribune's Christian Hill just published a great story about the political controversy between the city and the Pierce County Councilman. Muri is running for the 10th Congressional District spot against, among others, Stan Flemming, University Place's first mayor.

Basically, the city wants Muri, a Steilacoom Republican, to stop the trash talk about its finances. Why? The city says it's flat-out false.

But Muri, who's working to gain an edge on Flemming, has stated repeatedly that the city is in financial trouble, due mostly to a big investment and lack of financial return on Town Center.

He's also stated that Flemming is boasting about his time leading the city, according to Hill's story.

UP Mayor Ken Grassi drafted but never sent a letter to Muri, asking him to nix the "disparaging remarks," according to the newspaper, which obtained the letter from the city. University Place has worked to clear misconceptions about the project and keep the public abreast on the latest developments.

It's political theater, no doubt. We ask you, Patch users, which side of the story do you believe?

Well... I have seen nothing but a library. No shops. No restaurants. A chain link fence for a long time and lots of dirt. Something is wrong somewhere. UP is where people live and not a destination place as it should be. No one is in UP unless they live here..... Or play golf. Come on UP! We love our city (and it shows because those who are raised here come back and raise their kids here) but something is wrong. We need to get people out and about and out of their cars shopping; eating at a good restaurant; stimulating UP's economy. All I know is we were supposed to have a great place for all of us.... And all we have (as pretty as it is)..... Is a library. went and we have... A library.

The results of the above poll are exactly why the city continues to founder under crappy leadership. 74 percent of the population is ignorant, in denial, or both. It is amazing that choinere, Grassi and Flemming think they can run for higher office by touting all the great work they have done for UP.

LOL...this story cracks me up! Dick Murray really never paid any attention to what was happening in UP before, but now that someone is running against him who served on our city council, he's all about trash talking UP's finances. While I also question some of the financial decisions, it is obvious to me that his timing in this is just politics as usual.

Dick Muri is Correct ! This City I have lived in since 1970 is was and will be in debt until most of us are dead. I ran for Council and worked for City-hood. I ran on a get the money first and then spend it. Those who ran and won election immediately "credit carded" every unneeded, unplanned, useless project they could conger up including the Rube Goldberg "Town Center". But Unlike Rube Goldberg's plans that perform simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways to accomplish a task successfully - Disaster is and was the result - Financial, infrastructure and every way. Dick Muri opposed Chambers Bay Golf Course which only looses $1,000,000. or so each year. U.P. residents simply are not paying attention and are out of touch of reality on what its Council was and is doing. If YOU want a Knowledgeable, Careful, Intelligent and Dedicated person in Congress to spend your money wisely - Vote for Dick Muri for Congress. If YOU want Our United States of America to continue down the road to the Financial Disaster that U.P. is in - vote for one of the others. Think About It !

I'm not so sure Dick Muri is the right choice.

I'd like to know what great work choiniere think's he's done for the city....all I've ever seen of him is arrogance and disrespect to anyone he disagrees with....his council position is wasted space if you ask me.
