Opponent Drops Out of Race for Figueroa's Council Seat

Frank Boykin has withdrawn in the race against Javier Figueroa for Position 1 on the University Place City Council.

UP councilman Javier Figueroa will remain on the city council for another four years, after his opponent dropped out of the council race after candidate filing week closed.

Frank Boykin, a UP Planning Commissioner, withdrew his candidacy for Pos. 1 on May 21. He has not responded to Patch's request for an interview as to why.

"I believe that people participating is part of democracy. I encourage it. That's how you keep public officials in check, so an opponent is always welcome," said Figueroa. "I wish [Boykin] good luck. I voted to appoint him on the Planning Commission and enjoy his company."

Running unopposed does not mean he will become complacent in his role, Figueroa said. He's still planning a campaign kickoff event with supporters and will host coffee meet-and-greets with voters, to make himself available for questions.

Looking forward to the next four years, Figueroa is focusing on economic development, parks and being good hosts for the 2015 U.S. Open.

"I'm looking forward to continuing work with the council to achieve the goals we have set out for our city this year, including economic development, keeping parks and recreation programs funded and supporting street maintenance and law enforcement," said Figueroa. "In 2015 during the U.S. Open, I want to ensure that UP is a place that people will want to come back and visit, and a place to be proud of. I want people to see our city and think, 'that's a cool place to live.' This is our home and we should treat our visitors with respect and give them a good time."
