UP Library Begins Move to New Home

The first moving trucks arrived Monday to transport the library's materials to Town Center, where it will open full-time Feb. 12.

Moving day finally came Monday for the University Place branch of the Pierce County Library System.

Actually, it was more of the first day of moving week for the library, but it was still a big day for librarian Cindy Bonaro, who has been waiting four years for the move.

Even more exciting, she said, is the fact that the branch will operate in its new, highly anticipated home in two months.

"It's all moving in the direction of us opening Feb. 12," Bonaro said. "It's pretty exciting to see what it will look like."

On Monday, library users got a glimpse of the reduced offerings at its location off 27th Street West, as they walked into a room of empty book shelves, covered computer workstations and tight spaces.

The library also operated on reduced hours - noon to 6 p.m. - which will be its schedule for the rest of the week.

Still, Bonaro said users are still willing to visit. On Monday, some were working at the library's other computer workstations, while others were picking up some of the books they had reserved.

The library will continue to operate on a limited level at its temporary location until Feb. 7.

Then, it's onto its new home at Town Center.
