JBLM: New York-Based Group Helping To Bring Home Soldier's Rescued Dog From Afghanistan

The solder rescued the stray dog in Afghanistan. However, the dog, "Trigger" had to stay back when his adopted owner returned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord. A soldier's family and the "Guardians of Rescue" group want to reunite them.

Sometimes, the strongest bonds of friendship are the ones forged on the battlefield.

And it doesn't matter whether those friends have two legs or four.

Last week, Port Jefferson (NY) Patch Editor Lon Cohen produced an uplifting item about a local group that was working to reunite a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier and the dog he rescued from Afghanistan.

The soldier, idenitifed as "Matthew," was one of two personnel who rescued the pooches from Afghanistan's streets. The dogs - named Savannah and Trigger - stayed with the soldiers at their base. But one of the dogs - Savannah - met a tragic end:

One night while Jeff (the other owner) was out on a detail, Savannah wandered too far outside of camp and was captured by a local militia group who savagely mutilated and then killed her.

Back in December, 2011, Jeff’s cousin had contacted a Long Island-based animal rescue group called Guardians of Rescue to help her bring Savannah home when Jeff and Matthew’s unit returned to the U.S. in February. That was before Savannah was killed. The family and Guardians of Rescue then turned their efforts toward rescuing Matthew’s dog, Trigger.

Cohen reports that Trigger arrived in the U.S., last Thursday.

JBLM spokesman Joseph Piek says, at least to his understanding, that it will be a few weeks before the dog is reunited with his owner, who hasn't been identified publicly because of the nature of his assignment.

Either way, it appears a JBLM soldier will be reunited with his four-legged friend from Afghanistan soon.
