At 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sen. Maria Cantwell, a Democrat, had gathered 52.2 percent of the vote. Her challenger likely will be Republican state Sen. Michael Baumgartner who had pulled in 32.6 percent of the ballots counted.
The race for the newly formed 10th Congressional District will become clearer following Tuesday's primary election.
Voters will decide which two candidates will vye for the office in the November general election.
The 10th District covers a swath of Pierce and Thurston Counties, including Lakewood, University Place, Puyallup, Sumner, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Olympia and Shelton.
The race features Republicans Stan Flemming of University Place and Dick Muri of Steilacoom, Democrats Denny Heck of Olympia and Jennifer Ferguson of Lakewood, Progressive Independent Party candidate Sue Gunn and independent Steve Hannon.
The state's Top Two primary means any candidate, regardless of their preferred party, can run for the general election in November.
