Celebrate The Library's Kids Area This Saturday

The Pierce County Library Foundation helped secure $25,000 for improvements via the Pepsi Refresh Project.

While thousands of people are expected to attend University Place’s birthday party Saturday, the will hold its own celebration.

The Pierce County Library Foundation has scheduled a “Pepsi Party” at 2:30 p.m., to celebrate its $25,000 award it received for improvements to the University Place library’s kids and youth areas earlier this year.

The community earned the money by voting in the Pepsi Refresh Project last year. The goals of the library improvements, according to the Pepsi Refresh website, were to create:

- An early learning area designed for babies and caregivers

- An area that would get elementary kids excited about reading

- To create a “wired” zone for teens to learn, create and achieve.

During Saturday’s celebration, people can enjoy refreshments and win prizes. The University Place library is located in the Town Center Civic Building, 3609 Market Place W.

The Pierce County Library System’s Board of Trustees will discuss a plan to help sustain the environment in University Place at its meeting next Wednesday.

The board is expected to adopt recommendations for a sustainable environment outlined in the Community of University Place Vision for Sustainability. At the Board’s July meeting representatives from the City of University Place and University Place Pierce County Library provided information about the sustainability plan. The plan involves University Place School District, West Pierce Fire & Rescue, City of UP and UP Library. Individuals and organizations from throughout UP helped craft the plan that focuses on energy use, environmental health and natural resources, transportation and the overall vitality of the community. 

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., at the Library’s Processing and Administrative Center, 3005 112th St. E., in Tacoma.
