Carrell Pushing For Custom-Car Bill

Senate Bill 5585, which would make it easier for enthusiasts to register their street rod vehicles for occasional use, unanimously passed the state senate committee Monday.

Car enthusiasts might soon find it easier to register their classic hotrods with the state, and they have a big name in local politics on their side.

The Senate Transportation Committee unanimously approved Senate Bill 5585, which would make it easier for owners of cars built with parts from different vehicles to register them with the state based on the make and model newly built cars most closely resemble.

Sen. Mike Carrell, R-Lakewood, a car buff himself, sponsored the measure, which would also make street rods and custom-built cars exempt from a range of standard-equipment requirements and emissions inspections.

“I’m very pleased that the committee supported this idea,” Carrell said in a released statement. “I’ve gotten dozens of phone calls and e-mails from car buffs and hobbyists thanking me for proposing this legislation, which will establish constancy for both custom car builders and the state.”

But one thing the bill would not do is allow owners of custom-built cars to use them for everyday transportation, as those cars would still be limited to events such as parades, auto shows and tours.

The bill now moves to the full Senate for passage.
