Applebee's A No-Go At Town Center

Less than a year after officials trumpeted the first retail tenant at the mixed-use project, a deal collapses as public uncertainty about the project increases.

There will be no eatin' good in Town Center's neighborhood.

Less than a year after University Place officials - for which the city has invested more than $50 million - officials got word this week that the deal to have an Applebee's at Town Center is dead.

"Yesterday, Applebee’s gave UP an official notification terminating their Purchase & Sale Agreement," wrote City Manager Steve Sugg in an e-mail to City Council members this week. "Applebee’s did not give a reason for terminating their agreement."

The national restaurant chain's commitment to Town Center came into question earlier this year, when it opted to extend an exploratory period and did not begin building this summer, which it planned when it first signed the agreement.
