UP Saw Spike In Robbery, Violent Crimes In January

The numbers include four teens who allegedly held a woman hostage while they ransacked her home, and a robbery at Umpqua Bank.

A couple of high-profile incidents helped give University Place a huge spike in violent crimes in the first month of 2011, particularly robbery.

According to statistics from the , authorities responded to 16 violent crimes, which is a 129-percent increase from the same time last year.

The number of aggravated assaults, murders and rape stayed remained relatively the same, but police responded to 11 robberies in January, an increase of nine from 2010.

Two of those robberies were relatively high profile. while they ransacked her house, and two men allegedly .

The number of non-violent crimes remained unchanged from the previous year at 70. That bucks a trend that pointed to University Place .

Across the board, crimes such as drug possession, DUI and identity theft remained almost unchanged compared to last year. The number of vandalism cases dropped from 33 to 17.
