The following arrest and crime information has been supplied by the University Place Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

MAY 8, 2013

Theft of Wallet: A woman reported that her wallet was stolen from her shopping cart at Trader Joes. Fraudulent purchases were made to the credit cards inside her wallet.

Car Prowl: The front window of a vehicle parked at the Chambers Bay Golf Course was smashed out and a purse was stolen from under the front seat, which contained a full wallet of credit cards, identification and a cell phone.

MAY 10, 2013

Commercial Burglary: A fist-sized rock was used to break the front window of a dry cleaning business on 40th St. West. An electronic cash box was stolen, which contained $500.

MAY 11, 2013

Car Prowls: The front passenger window of a car was smashed in at the Chambers Bay Golf Course. The car owner told police his wallet was stolen, which was left in the cup holder, in plain sight.

The officer was about to leave Chambers Bay when another car prowl victim flagged him down. His passenger side window was smashed and a camouflage backpack was stolen, which contained a cell phone, military study guides and a .22 semi automatic handgun.

Domestic Violence, Vandalism: A resident on Snowberry Circle West reported that her ex-husband had been violent with her, after she confronted him about his alcoholism. He was still living with her because he had nowhere else to go, she said. The man had been arrested several times before by UP Police for violent incidents. This time, he kicked out the glass of the front screen and punched holes in the wall, while screaming profanities. He began to choke her and she kicked him, at which point he fled.

Police set up a perimeter with K9 units and the suspect was apprehended at 96th and Cirque Drive West. He smelled of intoxicants and said derogatory things to the officers while they arrested him. He also slammed his head hard against the back of the police car and officers were forced to use leg restraints to get him to calm down. He spat at a police officer, but luckily it landed on the tip of the officer’s boot.

The man was transported to Pierce County Jail and booked for charges of domestic assault, interfering with a 9-11 all and malicious mischief. The victim declined medical aid but requested a no-contact order against her ex-husband.

MAY 12, 2013

Vandalism of City Property: A City of University Place sign was vandalized with several Nazi swastikas and a depiction of a large penis. The sign, located on the 4700 block of Beckonridge Drive West, depicted the Safe Routes to Schools Project. A city employee responded to the scene and was able to wipe off the graffiti.

Strongarm Robbery: Police responded to reports of a fight involving several men and women at the Shell Station on Orchard Street. An officer contacted the victim near the 7-11, who said that two women “jumped” her and took her cell phone. She did not remain on the scene while police searched for the suspects and didn’t respond to police after they left her several messages for follow up. The third time the officer called the woman’s cell phone, she answered and said that she forwarded the number to another device.

DUI: An officer on patrol in the 7400 block of Lakewood Drive W. spotted a vehicle go through the intersection at 74th St. W. at a high rate of speed and run a red light. The driver, when questioned by police, said he was looking for his wife. The officer could smell intoxicants and the man said he had just come from a BBQ. The man was cited with failing to obey traffic laws and DUI.

MAY 15, 2013

Car Prowl: An officer responded to two car prowls at Cirque Park. The victim was a Special Agent for the Office of the Inspector General, and two laptops with sensitive information were stolen. Her badge, credentials and a Glock magazine round were also stolen. The other car window had also been smashed out and an iPad and wallet were stolen.
