The following arrest and crime information has been supplied by the University Place Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

JUNE 19, 2013

Robbery, Shoplifting: At approximately 11:20 p.m. officers were dispatched to Albertsons for a report of a robbery. A citizen said that about 10 young people had just fled into Homestead Park after being chased out by grocery store employees for stealing alcohol. Dispatch advised that one teen tried to strike a citizen with a skateboard just outside the store, after that person attempted to help store employees stop the group. Officers quickly arrived at the park and heard what appeared to be a number of people running away. All ignored commands to stop.

A few subjects were detained, including one 15-year-old well known to police for several other arrests. He was drunk, resisted arrest and swore at police. He admitted to stealing the liquor with his friends and police found marijuana, a pipe and bottle of vodka in his backpack. He was booked at Remann Hall for minor in possession, drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and MIP. A 20 year-old was also arrested and he admitted to stealing the alcohol and passing it along to someone else who was with them. He was “unable to remember” who he handed the alcohol to and the three bottles were not recovered. He was booked on charges of robbery, obstructing justice and making false statements to police. The 15-year-old who attempted to knock out the citizen in front of the store was also picked up nearby and arrested for second degree robbery and obstructing justice.

Robbery: Officers were dispatched to a robbery at Safeway at approximately 1:18 p.m. An off-duty loss prevention officer told police he was shopping in the store when he witnessed a 19 year-old conceal two bottles of Jagermeister in his jacket. The man confronted him and identified himself as a loss prevention officer, and the teen struck him with his elbow and claimed to have a knife. A fellow loss prevention officer took him into custody. The teen told police he was on his way to a party at his brother’s house when he decided to steal the liquor. He said he had no money for the arrest and only threatened the man to get away—he didn’t have a knife. He was booked at Pierce County Jail for first degree robbery and minor in possession.

Commercial Burglary: At approximately 2:45 a.m. officers responded to a burglary alarm at Northwest Snowboards. A window had been smashed and a large rock was found inside the window. It didn’t appear that anyone made entry and nothing was stolen.

Domestic Violence: A woman and her boyfriend went out for dinner and drinks and got into a dispute about the woman having to pay the bill. She told police that when they returned home, her boyfriend got very angry and threw a backpack at her, which destroyed her coffee maker on the countertop.  She said he threw her to the ground and then she grabbed his Kindle and threw it out onto the front lawn, because she was angry he broke her coffeemaker. There were no physical injuries and the woman appeared to be very intoxicated. The man was arrested for domestic assault, even though his girlfriend refused to sign any paperwork and insisted she didn’t want him to go to jail.

Vehicle Prowl: At approximately 2:12 p.m. officers responded to Chambers Bay Golf Course regarding a vehicle prowl. The victim said she parked her vehicle in the lot about two hours before and put her gym clothes and headphones in the covered trunk of her hatchback vehicle. She said a couple commented on her dog in the parking lot and she found it strange that they seemed to just be loitering there. She later returned to find her rear window smashed out and the items stolen from her car.

Police located the suspect vehicle but found it empty. Another woman sitting nearby told police that the woman ran one way and the man went the other. The victim’s handbag and headphones were lying on the ground a few feet behind the suspect vehicle, propped against a tree. As more police arrived to search the area, the male suspect casually walked up to police and asked what was going on. He was arrested and admitted to breaking into the car. He said the woman ran off because she had a warrant out for her arrest. He said he feared getting into trouble, because he was already involved in King County drug court. He was booked into jail. The woman was not located.

Shoplifting: An officer responded to Value Village at approximately 2:35 p.m. for a report of shoplifting. The suspect entered the fitting room with several items of clothing and attempted to leave with several items stuffed into a bag. She was detained for shoplifting and told police she was leaving on a weekend trip and had already spent a good portion of her money, and she needed clothes.

Hit And Run: Officers responded to a hit and run on 67th Ave. Ct. W. at approximately 5:50 p.m. The resident reported that his “ex friend” had intentionally rammed his garage door with his truck. The man said that they stopped being friends after he began seeing the man’s estranged wife. Some threatening text messages were exchanged earlier that day and the victim returned home to find his garage damaged, with several witnesses saying the other man had done it. Police went to the suspect’s house, where he was found with his two small children. The officers took him out of eyesight of his kids and placed him under arrest without incident. The man admitted to sending the text messages but said he wanted to see a lawyer before he said anything more. He was arrested for vandalism. He was intoxicated and belligerent with police, so he was also cited with harassment.
