Property Crimes Down Through First Quarter Of This Year

University Place saw a spike in car prowls, burglaries and other property crimes last year, but it has fallen so this year. Officials credit the city's alert system and better awareness among residents.

University Place saw a big drop in , burglaries and other property crimes through the first quarter of this year.

Overall, property crimes are at 38, which represents a 53-percent drop from last year.

Thefts are at 24, which is a a 52-percent drop compared to last year. That includes only 15 thefts from vehicles. Last year at this time, authorities had recorded 35.

The number of violent crimes was up, from 18 last year to 25 this year.

University Place Police Chief Rusty Wilder credited the drop in overall property crimes to his department's community outreach efforts. That includes better promotion of the city's alert system and increased awareness of theft.
