At 6:09 a.m. this morning, West Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to reports of a commercial fire at 7505 52nd Ave W. Crews arrived to find fully involved structure determined to be a furniture manufacturing company called Grandwood Furniture. Due to the size of the fire the Battalion Chief immediately called for a second alarm, later upgrading the incident to a three alarm fire.

Firefighters performed a defensive attack which means firefighters positioned themselves around the exterior of the structure and put the fire out because there was concern the building would collapse. In all, there were 13 large apparatus to include fire engines and ladder trucks, three medic units and several support staff on scene. Resources were called in from Tacoma, Central Pierce Fire & Rescue and Ft. Lewis Fire Department. The fire was declared under control at 8:21am. Crews are still at the scene putting out hot spots.
