Fire Damages Home In City's East End

The fire was first reported shortly before 10 a.m., today.

A fire caused more than $200,000 worth of damage and loss today to a University Place home.

Firefighters got a call around 9:52 a.m., today of a fire at 4236 Alturus Street W. Crews from both University Place and Lakewood Fire Departments arrived and found one of the home's residents outside yelling for help.

Firefighters found both the garage and front doors open with smoke billowing out of them. They entered the house and put out the fire, which was under control at 10:10 a.m.

According to the University Place Fire spokeswoman and Assistant Fire Marshal Hallie McCurdy, the home's downstairs was "heavily damaged by the fire, and the rest of the home had significant smoke damage." The damage is estimated at $110,000 to the home and $103,000 to the contents inside.

No injuries were reported to the house's residents, but the family dog did perish in the fire, she said.

The cause is under investigation.
