The following information is supplied by the University Place Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

July 9, 2013

DUI: A woman called in to report a reckless driver around the 3800 block of Bridgeport Way W. She said there was a truck in the Safeway parking lot doing donuts, almost hitting her husband, then leaving southbound on Bridgeport. Police approached him on 40th St. and Bridgeport and stopped him after turning east on 40th. The man driving the car responded slowly and inconsistently to officers’ questions and admitted he was high on marijuana. The officers administered field sobriety tests and noticed the man was shivering, despite it being a warm night. The man was arrested for DUI/drugs, and his vehicle was impounded. He was transported to Allenmore Hospital for blood tests and then taken home.

Obstruction: A man at an Albertson’s on Bridgeport Way was allegedly very intoxicated and harassing customers. It was the third call officers had responded to about this man that day but were unable to locate him, until the store manager reported the man was in Albertson’s. When officers arrived, they found him talking on the phone, slurring his words and struggling to keep his balance. He walked over to the customer service clerk, who appeared as if she was afraid to interact with him. One officer told him to leave the store and tried to bring him outside. Upon exiting, the man started running away. The two officers caught up to him and held him to the ground as they handcuffed him. They arrested him for obstructing the investigation, upon which he admitted there was a warrant for his arrest already and said he was going to be in jail for a long time. He was booked into jail.

Reckless Riding: An officer followed a group of recklessly driving motorcyclists southbound on Bridgeport Way, assisted by witnesses along the street who pointed out where they were going. One of them started doing a “wheelie.” Around 67th Ave and Bridgeport, the motorcyclists accelerated to about 80 mph and were occupying two lanes. They stopped at a red light and noticed the officer behind them. One rider gestured to the others to block the officer and drove off, ignoring the emergency lights from the patrol car. The rider eventually made a U-Turn and began traveling northbound on Bridgeport. He accelerated to 70-75 mph and ran a red light. He sped up to over 100 mph and the officer could not catch up. Shortly afterwards, the officer found the rider lying in the grass around the 6100 block of Bridgeport, injured and having difficulty breathing. The officer and a bystander helped the man stabilize his breathing until medics arrived and took him to a hospital. The case is under review for reckless driving and eluding police.

Counterfeit: A manager at Little Caesar’s Pizza on Orchard St. was arguing with a customer over a counterfeit $20 bill. The man who tried to pay with the bill insisted that it had to be real because it came from Safeway as change. An officer responding to the call examined the bill and determined that it was counterfeit and booked it into the UP Property Room. The man said he had no knowledge it was counterfeit before trying to pay with it and said he would see what recourse he had.

Domestic Violence: A man at the 6200 block of 70th Ave. Ct. W. called to report a disturbance in his home. He told police his wife was yelling at him, believing he was cheating on her, and that she had kicked a door off its hinges. After he got outside, he said she began throwing property out of his car onto the parking lot and kicked his car, leaving a large dent. Police arrived and saw the damage, which is estimated at $1,500. The woman insisted she was only arguing with him and had caused none of the damage. An officer noticed that the shoeprint on the dent on the car matched the tread pattern on her shoes and arrested her for malicious mischief.
