Authorities Investigating "Suspicious" Apartment Fire

The University Place Fire Department responded to the blaze after 10 a.m., at a nearby apartment complex.

Authorities are investigating what caused a fire today at the Hidden Hills Apartments, and they aren't ruling out arson.

No one was hurt in the blaze, which started in a second-story unit.

The University Place Fire Department responded shortly after 10 a.m., and arrived in seconds because the apartment complex is located around the corner from the station.

UP Fire Battalion Chief Dan Snope said the fire destroyed one unit that was unoccupied, and another unit below was likely damaged due to water. Two others received smoke damage.

UP Fire dispatch a fire engine, a fire truck and two medic trucks. It also got help from Lakewood Fire District, which sent two fire engines and a fire truck.

Snope said the Pierce County Sheriff's Department and Fire Marshal are investigating what caused the fire, and aren't ruling out arson.

"It's awfully suspicious," he said.
