Fourth of July in University Place: What's Open and Closed

Here's your guide to the fourth of July holiday on Thursday in UP.

The Fourth of July is Thursday and observed as a federal holiday. Some area offices and agencies are also closed on Friday, July 5. Here's what you need to know to get around during the week.

If you are traveling, check out the Washington State Department of Transportation web pages to plan your route. (Here’s a link to the state’s mobile site.) Be sure to check for traffic, weather and construction updates along Interstate 90 at Snoqualmie Pass, U.S. 2 at Stevens Pass, Interstate 5 near the U.S./Canadian border and I-5 between Olympia and Tacoma. (If you’re traveling early this week, check the I-90 rock-blasting closure schedule.)

University Place City Hall will be closed on Thursday, July 4 in observance of Independance Day. Offices will re-open on Friday, July 5 at 9 a.m.

UP School District is on summer vacation.

Pierce County government: Closed Thursday.

U.S. Postal Service: Closed Thursday.

Pierce County Library System is closed Thursday.

Pierce Transit: Pierce Transit bus and SHUTTLE services will operate on a Sunday schedule on Thursday. Pierce Transit administrative offices, Bus Shop locations and phone information services will be closed.

Sound Transit: Express Bus, Tacoma Link and Central Link are on a Sunday schedule on Thursday. There is no Sounder Train service Thursday.

Tacoma Mall: Open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Grocery Stores: Normal store hours for most stores. Costco is closed; Trader Joes is open until 5 p.m. 

State of Washington: Closed Thursday.

Washington State Ferries: A holiday schedule is in effect on Thursday for the Point Defiance/Tahlequah, Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth, and Seattle/Bainbridge Island routes. The state advises travelers to plan for heavy traffic around the holiday.

Federal government: Closed Thursday.

Banks: Many, if not most, will be closed Thursday. Check your local branch.

Garbage and RecyclingUP Refuse will operate on a normal schedule.
