Tacoma Bon Odori

Annual street festival featuring Japanese folk dance, candlelight memorial & drum groups Matsuri Taiko, of Seattle, & Fuji
Taiko, of Tacoma. Dozens of dancers, most wearing colorful yukata and other traditional garb, will dance under hanging lanterns in the street. Dances are simple, and everyone is welcome to join in.

Foods for sale include: teriyaki chicken bowls, unagi (eel) bowls, chili bowls, somen noodles, Spam musubi (rice cakes), barley tea, daifuku mochi (rice pastry), strawberry mochi, kori shave ice, homemade pie and more. Some items available as gluten-free or vegetarian. Beer garden for adults.

No practice necessary to dance at Obon, but you can learn the dances ahead of time.

Public dance practice: July 16, 17 & 18, 7:30-9 pm, in

Temple Social Hall. Obon is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist tradition honoring

ancestors.
