OPERATION FUN – Pierce County’s 1st ANNUAL FREE VETERANS APPRECIATON EVENT

UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA, OCTOBER 1, 2012:

A community based event team of veterans and civilians will create Pierce County’s largest Veteran Appreciation Event, Operation Fun.  This day of fun takes place in the parking lot of the Narrows Plaza Bowl, 2200 Mildred St W, University Place, WA on Saturday Nov 3rd from 10-4.  It is free to our Veterans, Service Members and their families in support of the mission to End Veteran Suicide.

This event will feature fun activities for all ages, entertainment, games, bouncers, displays, food for purchase, resources and great information.  It is a day to provide free fun and information on the services and benefits available to Service Members, Veterans and their families.

“This is an opportunity for the community to join forces to honor all Veterans (Active Duty and Past Duty) for their sacrifice and to welcome them home.  If we all do a little it adds up to a lot and will make a difference in their lives”, said Rod Wittmier the event lead.  Mr. Wittmier, also an Army Veteran, is the founder and Program Director of the National Alliance to End Veteran Suicide, a program of the Veterans Family Fund of America.  Mr. Wittmier also added that “event team members are made up of veterans and civilians, individuals and business owners.  Guests will receive a passport that once it’s stamped by visiting vendor booths, will allow their family to enjoy free bowling, roller skating, movie passes, Odyssey passes, cotton candy, popcorn, $1 ice cream cones at DQ, $15 discount at Jiffy Lube and other great activities and fun!

Civilians can purchase a wrist band to enjoy the festivities and fun for a $10 donation.

The Veterans Family Fund of America is the non-profit born from the leadership of the WA State Department of Veterans Affairs.  The VFFA fills the gap between the federal VA and the state programs for our Veterans and their families.

West Side Branch logo

I wonder how much this `re-branding' cost?? Perhaps the City of UP could get a deal on what theyRead More want to spend on `re-branding'! It still sounds like Tacoma is the preferred branch of Pierce County - that is, why is not `Pierce County Chamber of Commerce' - and what is the implied difference between `west side' and `south county' ? And, of course, that begs the question - is there an` east side' and a `north county' that is being ignored?? I don't know why I am so confused..maybe because their new logo has a haunting resemblance to that of a former company that went bankrupt... And, lastly, let us hope that `business in motion' is moving into our county, and not out of it..

Just read that story. Great article, and a well deserved award. I haven't really followed the teamRead More this year. Do they have a shot this week in state? It's at MT Tahoma, so I may just have to head over there.

No sweat Dan. Here's the link. By the way, this story also took first in the Washington PressRead More Association contest, so people apparently related to the team's story. Go Curtis!

I went to Mt. St. Helens and did a hike last weekend. It's so amazing to see a broken mountain inRead More repair... I hadn't been since I was a kid, but it was quite an experience!

Hey Patty, thanks for this note. I'm trying to get in touch with the city and the developer. WasRead More this discussed at a meeting or something?

Are the Mayor and Mayor pro tem getting a `pass'??
Lauren Padgett (Editor) May 16, 2013 at 01:22 pm
He should post a "get to know me" post on Patch! I'd like to hear more about what he'sRead More interested in working on, if he's elected.
