WEEKEND: Excessive Heat May Be Gone, But Thunder, Lightning Could Hit Region

The National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch alerting people that lightning could start new fires.

It could be a lightning kind of weekend in University Place and other parts of Puget Sound.

The National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch for the region for this weekend. Temperatures won't hit 90 degrees like they did Thursday, but there is an increased chance of lightning and thunderstorms.

"Given very dry fuel conditions," the NWS warns, "lightning has the potential to start new wildfires."

Here is the forecast for University Place through Monday night:

This Afternoon: Sunny, with a high near 87. Light west wind.
Tonight: Increasing clouds, with a low around 61. West wind 6 to 9 mph.
Saturday: Areas of fog before 11am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. Southwest wind 6 to 13 mph.
Saturday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59. Southwest wind around 10 mph.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 72. Southwest wind 11 to 13 mph.
Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 57.
Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 72.
Monday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 56.
