POLL: Do You Support Banning Texting While Walking?

As communities across the country have banned texting while driving, one New Jersey town has opted to prohibit people from doing it while walking. We ask you, Patch users, is it a good idea or is it going too far?

Your buddy: "Where u @?"

You: "Walking down the street"

Your buddy: "LOL! Ur a rebel!"

You: "Yep ... Oh crap. I'm being pulled over by a cop"

While this text-message conversation is unlikely in University Place, at least one New Jersey town has made it by possible by banning texting while walking.

The Huffington Post reports that Fort Lee, NJ implemented the ban in late March, and officers have issued 117 violations to date.

The penalty for texting while walking? $85.

Fort Lee authorities say it's an issue of safety and cited local and national instances in which texting contributed directly to accidents.

So we ask you, Patch users, would you support a ban on texting while walking? Let us know in our poll and via the comments section.

I can see both sides. While initially, it feels like an invasion on what we can and can't do, I've run into people who were texting while walking. But would it stop at texting? What about talking on cell phones while walking? Would we need to require a hands-free device, like driving? Idk.

How about banning texting & talking on cell phones while getting checked out at the grocery/drug store? As a cashier, I find it immensely annoying to try to do my job for the customer when they are yammering away on their cell phones. I had one girl last week get huffy with me because I was asking her questions while she was talking to her BFF on the phone. Questions like, will this be debit or credit?....would you like a bag?....may I see your ID? However, I don't think this should be legislated. As I mentioned in another poll, we don't need an Orwellian State to make sure all is well in our lives.

I believe we have gone too far to say people can't text while walking. People need to be aware of their surroundings no matter if they are on a cell phone or stepping off of the curb. I vote no!

Right. It seems a lot of people agree with you. That was my first inclination as well.

I agree that we don't need, nor should we want, an Orwellian State. By the same line of thinking, when one is walking, texting, and steps in front of a bus, or has the headphones on, and doesn't hear the car, et cetera, one should not be able to sue the NON-Orwellian State, or its citizens, to compensate for one's stupidity.
