Patch Wins Journalism Award

Editor Brent Champaco won first place in the online sports reporting category of the 2011 SPJ Pacific Northwest Excellence in Journalism Competition.

SEATTLE-Patch took home its first SPJ Pacific Northwest journalism award Saturday night, winning first place in the online sports reporting category of the Excellence in Journalism Competition.

Editor Brent Champaco won for his stories on University Place athletes:

  • Then 9-year-old l, a track-and-field phenom who is competing against girls twice her age
  • , the Curtis-turned-WSU basketball player who led his team to the state finals before losing in the title game
  • , the Curtis football player who, before his last home game on Senior Night, used a laptop to chat with his mother, who was in the hospital.

Champaco took first, followed by ESPN HoopGurlz.com and The Seattle Times for its coverage of University of Washington basketball.
