Maj. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza Tapped As Commander at Joint Base Lewis-McChord

He will assume commande of the 7th Infantry Division Headquarters - totaling some 17,000 soldiers - when the unit is reactivated Oct. 1.

The U.S. Army announced this week that Maj. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza will assume command of the 7th Infantry Division Headquarters at Joint Base Lewis-McChord when the unit is reactivated Oct. 1.

Secretary of the Army John McHugh announced the establishment of the new two-star headquarters April 27 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. This unit will provide oversight for personnel, equipment, training and readiness of three Stryker Brigade Combat Teams, a Combat Aviation Brigade and a Fires Brigade -- totaling some 17,000 soldiers. 

"The growth of this installation, and its increased significance in our nation's defense strategy, makes this an important and challenging assignment," said Secretary of the Army John McHugh. "I've had the privilege of knowing and working with Major General Steve Lanza. He's a tested warrior, a proven leader, and an effective, tenacious commander. I have every confidence in his ability to effectively lead the 7th Infantry Division, and continue serving our Army and the nation with distinction."

“As with all command selections, we looked for an officer who has demonstrated superior leadership capabilities in challenging assignments,” said Gen. Ray Odierno, the Army chief of staff. “Steve Lanza clearly possesses the attributes, skills and energy to compliment the great leaders already serving at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.  He will undoubtedly create a first-rate team to properly train his units for all missions and support family members, as well.”

Lanza is currently serving as the Army’s Chief of Public Affairs.  He previously commanded the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division during its 2005 combat deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and later returned to Iraq as the Director, J-9, United States Forces – Iraq in 2008-9. He also deployed in support of Operation Joint Guard in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1996-97 and Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
