ORIGINAL STORY

The other end of the country is bracing for what weather experts are calling a "megastorm" in Hurricane Sandy.

The storm is expected to threaten some 50 million people on the Eastern Seaboard, including tens of thousands of residents who've been evacuated from some of the country's most populated areas, the Associated Press is reporting via the Huffington Post.

New York City announced its subways, buses and trains would stop running Sunday night because of the risk of flooding, and its 1.1 million-student school system would be closed on Monday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg also ordered the evacuation of part of lower Manhattan and other low-lying neighborhoods.

"If you don't evacuate, you are not only endangering your life, you are also endangering the lives of the first responders who are going in to rescue you," he said. "This is a serious and dangerous storm."

Several businesses in New York City, for example have closed their doors, and won't reopen until midweek, including Patch's headquarters.

Facebook user Sona wrote this:

Scene at REI in SoHo earlier today: Couple people fighting for rain boots, batteries and flashlights gone. Be careful out there, NY!

As expected, the storm's approach has forced the cancellation of thousands of flights, the AP is reporting.

Patch users - are you or is anyone you know on the East Coast right now? If yes, what are you seeing? What's the scene like? Tell us in the comments below.

Most of these "megastorms" are blown way out of proportion by the media. We don't have to look any farther than our own backyards. They can make the most benign look horrific.
Louise Marley October 28, 2012 at 08:34 pm
Friends in New York City say it's eerily quiet, transit shut down, people holed up in their homes. They're planning on telecommuting tomorrow!
Louise Marley October 28, 2012 at 08:35 pm
I think after Katrina, folks have learned to pay attention. Great news if the storm isn't as bad as predicted, but really awful if people ignore the warnings.
Brent Champaco (Editor) October 28, 2012 at 08:46 pm
I agree that storms can sometimes get blown out of proportion, Klondiko, but I don't think this is one of those instances. The fact that the mayor of New York is asking people to evacuate entire sections of his city and thousands of flights have been grounded is proof.
Does that guarantee that Sandy will be huge? Of course not. But officials think it's serious enough to evacuate people from their homes.
Brent Champaco (Editor) October 28, 2012 at 09:02 pm
Quiet New York seems like an oxymoron. People are taking it seriously.
Jeanne Gustafson (Editor) October 28, 2012 at 09:04 pm
Thanks for sharing your opinion, Klondiko. I think in many situations it's a case of better safe than sorry, especially when you have large concentrations of potentially vulnerable people near the coastlines, living in multiple story buildings that could be hard to evacuate. Ironically, the same criticism could be levied on the lack of advance coverage and evacuation before Katrina in the south, with devastating consequences.
On the East Coast, this is especially true, and just to note, the reports of the coming storm come from NOAA, the National Weather Service. In any case, the canceled flights and services are real, whether the storm hits or not.

LOL Randy..there are three businesses listed under `Optometry' (I had trouble with the font/style onRead More the red background of the categories). I am always amazed at the number of businesses I did not know about..I chuckled at the `puffing' on pages 5-8 - no need to go any further with re-branding..

LOL....I had difficulty reading it also!

The disclaimer is printed in even smaller type than the rest of the pamphlet. It was very difficultRead More to read the part where it stated that " it was produced at the request of, and in coordination with the Economic Development Office of the City of University Place." And you whiners complain about how our tax dollars are spent. Just be lucky you don't own a business here and depend on "Looking UP" to promote it. Randy, as both a local business owner and member of UP's Economical Development Board, you have earned the right to complain about this! Howard

You are lucky to have a man of Elmer's quality as part of your life! He is a true officer andRead More gentleman, who served his county by performing arduous tours of duty, several in a combat role. However, if I were to characterize Elmer with one word it would be "unselfish." Like you, I am lucky to have known Elmer and able to call him a friend. Howard

What a nice Father's Day wish to Elmer from his daughter. He and Linda are lucky parents.

I heard it, Patty. He isn't the only one to do so, either. We need to be on a crusade to help thoseRead More national media types get the actual host city correct.

On TV yesterday a "man on the street" said the US Open would be good for SEATTLE andRead More Tacoma!!! Yes, our work is cut out for us getting people to say University Place, even "near Tacoma" would be okay. Over a year ago, I wrote to a magazine requesting they use the correct city for Chambers Bay because they said it was in Tacoma. Every time we hear someone in the media say "those other cities' names", we must write/text/email them and set them straight. They probably don't know about UP.
Ken Campbell June 18, 2013 at 07:26 pm
At the last Partner UP held at Chambers Bay, I challenged all the members present from the TacomaRead More Pierce County Chamber of Commerce to `get it right'. Now that the UP-Fircrest branch has become merely the West Branch, it will be even harder to find UP!

<<another mom>> How would I go about finding out if the other driver was issued aRead More citation/ticket? His insurance company is pretty adamant about closing the deal. I'm under the assumption HIS insurance company would have those details?
another mom May 30, 2013 at 06:12 pm
Call UP police, ask. That's when we found out. I wouldn't be too eager to close, either. Even thoughRead More our car was totaled, insurance paid us only 1/2 the replacement value (we'd found an identical car). The fact that the deputy didn't cite the other driver (even though there were witnesses that stated that person was breaking the law and entirely responsible) did affect our claim, and we're still suffering as a result. Good luck.
Christie Anderson May 30, 2013 at 10:11 pm
Cedar....Never close straight away with the insurance company. I figure if they are anxious to closeRead More their client was cited, lol.
