Pastor's Corner: A Bigger Voice Called Us to Washington

Patch blogger and senior pastor at The Church on the Hill tells how his family's move to the Evergreen State was prompted by something bigger than him.

When we moved from Alaska to the great state of Washington (which gives a whole new meaning to the term “downesize") our two cars looked like the Smif’s from Arkansas were headed West.

We didn’t have the mattress tied to the top, but with two cars full of kids and dogs and stuff, it was a sight to behold. I kept trying to get the dogs to seek asylum in Canada, but they kept having guilty feelings and coming back. I kept forgiving them and sending them off again…

The truth is, we had been in Alaska for 30 years. Our adult life was there, and that is the place we called home. But there was a bigger voice calling us to Washington. His call was confirmed by our four children. It was confirmed by my Mother-in-Law. And, my wife and I already knew it was time to make the move.

How did we know that the bigger Voice was from God? The first indication was that this was something we would have never planned. No way. Higher taxes and a more expensive place to live was not in our vocabulary. Alaska is a place where men are men, soap is still soap, and toilets still use water. Not Washington! We have never regretted the move.

We came here because He gave clear indication through those we loved that now was the time. How about you? God may be telling you to do something that is outrageous? Maybe it is no more than to go to that interview. Maybe it is just ‘take this job, and I will show you more later’. Whatever it is, if you hear the voice of God speaking, verify that it is His, and then make the move. His Word is filled with encouragement to be bold and courageous.
