WHAT SHOULD GO HERE? The Keg Steakhouse & Bar

The Canada-based company confirmed last month that it wasn't renewing its lease in University Place. We ask you, Patch users, what do you think should go in its place?

Earlier this month, Patch broke the news that The Keg Steakhouse & Bar was closing its doors in University Place.

The Canada-based company announced that it wasn't going to renew its lease at its building on Mildred Street West. University Place is one of two locations in Washington the company is shuttering (Renton being the other).

A company spokesman says the decision was based on economics, as well as the condition of the building.

The news prompted an outpour from restaurant-goers who were shocked and disappointed at the restaurant's pending departure Jan. 19.

"I am older than most here and grew up 2 blocks from here," commented user Maryanne Zukowski, "and have fond family memories of taking my daughter to the movies and dinner on Xmas eve."

A few Patch users commented that the public should lobby the company to remain at the UP location. Hopefully they can make something good happen.

Barring that, however, The Keg will be gone next month after 31 years. The next logical question once it does is what will take its place.

So we put the question to you, Patch users: If The Keg closes its doors as scheduled, what should replace it? Another steakhouse? A restaurant? Another type of business?

I like the casino idea. I see the chinese buffet by Albertson closed also.

UP's problem with economic development certainly provides you plenty of topics on which to ask for comment. There is economic activity in the region, just not here. Howard

Maybe a pizza place. And its gimmick could be that they have a huge pipe organ that they play during the dinner rush.
Jack December 13, 2012 at 01:28 AM
They need to bring that place back!
Jack December 13, 2012 at 01:34 AM
That's why the Keg is also closing in Renton, K-mart is closing in Lakewood, and Chevy's is closing in Tacoma (just to name a few), because they have so much economic activity. UP is getting Harbor Greens in the Spring and new businesses for the new Town Center building in a few months.

We have the Kiwi & Frog cafe' in the new Town Center on Bridgeport for children and their families, how about something like it only for dog owners. I'd love to have an indoor agility play area where I could also sit and have a coffee when the pooch is tired out.

The buffet at Albertsons closed?

The chinese buffet, that replaced the closed video store, has closed. [ not the food service counter inside of Albertson's ]

Actually I think this whole site needs to be blown up and redeveloped/reconfigured ala what they did to James Center North. I know this sounds like a Market Square scenario but I'm talkin about it being done as a private iniative not the inept bungled mess our dear city leaders produced. I have been told commercial RE experts have said the Bridgeport site never had a big enough footprint for the development UP envisioned ala University Square in Seattle or Uptown in Gig Harbor. The economy still sucks but then again interest rates are still low. Could be an opportunity for someone with the right idea and the know how to accomplish a project.

Patty, you are right on the mark! However, the ever increasing number of vacant business properties here in UP makes developing new sites less appealing, not to mention the fees incurred in new construction. Howard

Why can't the Keg move to where Massimo's was on Bridgeport Way & 35th; and put a Panera Bread where the Keg is leaving. I love Panera, was hoping they would have put one in the complex of the new Library construct. I love the ambience, more their breads & soups & sandwiches.

Checking it out now, SA

Where is the closest Panera Bread? Lakewood, right?
Brent Champaco December 13, 2012 at 07:47 PM
It would help me, because as UP coffee shop owners can attest, as Patch editors love us some free wifi :)

UP area Restaurants are one by one closing due to lack of business. Massimo's after being open for just a year at that location. Saris closed over a lease issue and just in the last few weeks the all you can eat Buffet closed at the Block Busters location. The area needs a family style Restaurant with a Menu that covers a good Breakfast specials. This menu should have pricing that a working man can afford!
Howard and Barbara Lee December 13, 2012 at 08:24 PM
The Pine Cone Restaurant should meet your criteria for a family style restaurant. Not sure what your standards are for pricing that a working man can afford. However, if you are looking for a 12 cent McDonalds hamburger, you are about 60 years too late. Howard

I would like to see Cracker Barrel, Jimmy Mac's, Chipolte Mexican Grill or Noodles & Company go into this location. I am concerned however; as how on Earth will a restaurant owner or a developer want to move into University Place? We have had 7 restaurants close in a short period of time - PLUS - I do not see any new development here. Yet, new businesses are still being developed in Gig Harbor and Puyallup !

Ahem,,,Sharis closed too :(
Patty Schumacher December 15, 2012 at 02:40 AM
UP is the new Tacoma
Hotaru January 02, 2013 at 01:27 AM
Sorry for the delay, Brent don't know about distances...there's Lakewood & the one at the Tacoma Mall. Thanks
