Walmart Ready to Reveal New Store to Tacoma Shoppers

Tacoma's new Walmart on S. Union Ave. will bring approximately 300 jobs to the area.

From Tacoma Walmart:

A new Walmart will open Wednesday, July 17, after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store at 1965 S. Union Ave. is open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. It will provide Tacoma residents with one-stop shopping convenience for their grocery and general merchandise needs, including pharmacy services.

The Tacoma Walmart is one of 24 stores the company is opening across the country on July 17, 2013.

“We are excited about welcoming our community to their new Walmart,” said Fann. “We are pleased to bring good jobs and 'Every Day Low Prices' on a wide selection of merchandise to our community, and we hope everyone will stop by to see the new store during our grand-opening festivities.”

Community Giving

In addition to its 'Every Day Low Prices,' Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are proud to support the Tacoma community through its charitable giving. The company has fully funded the Tacoma Goodwill’s Operation: Goodjobs program as a part of its commitment to empower military veterans with the tools they need to find employment, advance in their careers and ensure long-term financial stability for their families.

“In addition to the general Tacoma community, the new Tacoma Walmart is of particular benefit to our many local veterans,” says Greg Mowat, the Veteran and Business Specialist at the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber. “The new store will be a valuable community partner for veterans with its proximity to Joint Base Lewis-McChord and Walmart’s recent commitment to hiring more than 100,000 veterans over the next five years.”

At the grand opening, several area organizations will receive grants, including the Emergency Food Network of Tacoma and Pierce County. The organization was awarded $60,000 from the Washington State Giving Council for its Food Purchasing Program.

Throughout the past five years, the Walmart Foundation has awarded more than $1.2 million to Tacoma and Pierce County nonprofits through the Washington State Giving Program, community grants and through initiatives with Goodwill. Pierce County grantees include a variety of civic organizations, including: Family Renewal Shelter, Hilltop Artists in Residence, Toys for Tots, Korean Women’s Association, Safe Streets Campaign, Washington Women’s Employment and Education, the Bryant Neighborhood Block Party and Charlie’s Dinosaur.

A Big Family Welcome

Walmart is happy to be part of the Tacoma community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, July 20. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Fann and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
