Tacoma Top Food & Drug Closing, What Should Replace It?

Tacoma's Top Food & Drug on South 23rd Street will close permanently in four to six weeks, Haggen, Inc announced Wednesday.

A longtime grocery staple in Tacoma is closing--Top Food & Drug, located near University Place on South 23rd Street.

According to The Tacoma News Tribune, the closure will impact about 64 employees, who will likely be relocated to other stores owned by the parent company Haggen, Inc.

The store's closure after a long tenure in Tacoma is due to the impending competition from the area's first Walmart, a Haggen rep told the News Tribune. Walmart is planning a ribbon cutting at its new location, the old Elks Lodge, on July 17.

Top Foods' neighbor Target has long been in competition with the grocery store, after it started selling produce and food about a year ago.

It's unclear at this time what will happen to the Top Foods space, but it could possibly be reopened as Haggen Fresh, a gourmet grocery store. The Lakeland Hills Top Foods completed its metamorphosis into Haggen Fresh this past May. (Read more on Bonney Lake-Sumner Patch).
