Harbor Greens accepted 500 job applications from the community to fill 30 positions inside the store and business has been booming since it opened on March 1.

The store is the culmination of a $500,000 investment in the 10,333 square foot storefront.

"We were welcomed on [opening day] by hoards of people. The first weekend of business surpassed our expectations," said Harbor Greens owner Chad Roy to the University Place city council at the March 4 council meeting.

Roy and his business partner, Scott Teodoro, opened their first Harbor Greens in Gig Harbor over five years ago. The idea for the market was inspired by the need for a year-round farmers market.

"We're really excited to bring something new to this area that it really needs," said Roy.

Roy is a Curtis High School grad and told the University Place city council that he is a UP resident, with four children in the school district. Teodoro resides in Gig Harbor.

"It seems like people love Harbor Greens so far, it's like we're superheroes," said Teodoro. "It takes Chad 20 minutes to walk through the store. It seemed like a natural fit, to open a new location in his backyard."
